During the cold winter months pool water tends to stay clear with very little help. Generally algae does not appear and I hardly ever see a pool turn green. Any algae growth that does occur is extremely slow.
Of course winterizing is ideal, but many of our pools are not winterized. To these we add an occasional dose of chlorine and run the pump at least once a week. Vacuuming requirements are negligible – once every 3 or 4 weeks is plenty under normal circumstances.
Winterized pools? We cover them and forget them until April or May, which is so much easier.
At the end of the day it is the pool owner who makes the decision and either way we are happy; our pools are always clear and blue.
Great articles..You have done a outstanding job! Also I might add, this is an in ground pool and it is screened in. Any information would be much appreciated.

We have swamp green water. All our chemicals are perfect. We have cleaned, algaecided x3 for all kinds of algae. We’ve spent around $300 on chemicals with no results. We’ve even replaced the spider gasket in the pool pump. We are in the verge of with dumping our closing it up. We’ve even checked for metals. I’ve never had so much trouble.
I’m not sure if anyone answered my previous question about my pool. Swamp green. We had covered it and a dog walked across the pool cover dumping gum balls, pine needles and cones and leaves in it. We vacuumed, scrubbed and algaecided for green algae twice and yellow algae. The chemicals are perfect but it’s still green. At least the frogs are enjoying it. Above ground 27 ft round and 4.5 ft in depth.
nice tips and article you have here about pools in winter
I’ve seen examples where folks leave a small amount of live algae in the pool and can’t understand it for the life of me. I’ve always thought that you’re supposed to completely clean out the pool before winterizing. I’ve been fielding quotes on what average winterizing costs all over the country and you wouldn’t believe the conflicting pricing & methods used.

Good little article of the basics on how to treat your pool in the winter time, however you could elaborate a bit a good source for pool covers would be nice. Maybe a few points in more detail about pool service in the winter time, cutting the service intervals in half or less. In the south where we are located we actually prefer NOT closing the pool and continue service throughout the year.
